Musicality Workshops for Tango Dancers 2009 by TanguerIN

MUSICALITY WORKSHOPS FOR TANGO DANCERS
with Ivo and Nadia

28 September, Monday
7.00 pm - 10.00 pm - traditional tango

30 September, Wednesday
7.00 pm - 10.00 pm - contemporary tango (nuevo and electronico)

--------------
Location: The Czech/Slovak Club, 15 Krakra St., Sofia
Price: 20 lv. per workshop
Note: Each workshop is 180 min. long with a 15 min. break in the middle
--------------

The aim of these workshops is to present the specifics of argentine tango as a musical genre, as it is played today at the milongas around the world - from the orchestras before and during the Golden Age of tango to the electronic tango which has grown in polularity during the last decade.

The workshops will be led by Ivo and Nadia, founders of TanguerIN Studio, for whom the dancing of tango is unthinkable without knowing and loving the music. Long-time tango music collector and DJ, Ivo often gives similar workshops in Bulgaria and Switzerland.

The idea behind these workshops is that in tango dancing apart from the connection within the couple there is another very important connection - between the dance movement and the music that is being played. In the context of the improvised dance, such as the authentic argentine tango, knowing the music and the interpretations of the various orchestras is of extreme importance if one is to feel the inner magic and beauty of tango and to use the body as a musical instrument with which to "play" the music.

The workshops cover the following topics:
- the characteristics of the rhythm and the melody of argentine tango and the difference between the rhythmical base and the melodic rhythm
- the role of the various instruments
- the differences in the interpretation and the arrangements of the famous orchestras
- getting to know the form and the structure of tango music and how to predict the music in the case of unknown pieces.
- applying all of the above in the dance, using various figures corresponding to specific rhythmical or melodic elements and to the style of the various orchestras; how to do this improvising while dancing to known or unknown pieces.

It is not necessary to sign-up with a partner, although it is always appreciated if you bring someone along :-). During the workshops we will work individually and in couples and we will, of course, change partners.

It is not necessary to have any theoretical musical knowledge, the workshops are for people with no musical education. However, it is necessary that you already dance tango (min. 3 months experience). In general, the more experienced dancers will profit more from the material covered, however, we recommend the workshops to everyone who loves the music of argentine tango, wants to learn more about it and to enrich their dance with new ideas and figures.

We hope to make you enjoy dancing tango!

WE HOPE TO MAKE YOU LOVE TANGO MUSIC EVER MORE!

Legendary bandoneonist Rodolfo Mederos comes to Sofia

TanguerIN and Jazz+ present:
Legendary argentinean bandoneonist
Rodolfo Mederos
in a tango concert with
RODOLFO MEDEROS TRIO
and tango dancers
Natalia Games and Gabriel Angio (Buenos Aires)
Sofia, Bulgaria Concert Hall, 17 November 2009, 7.30 pm

Bandoneonist, composer and arranger Rodolfo Mederos is a natural musician in every sense of the word. His forceful personality has produced a profound effect on tango, developing a style fraught with popular essence and emotion. In the mid-70's, after working with such giants of tango music as Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Pugliese, he has decided to look for his own style. It was through his desire to search through other rhythms that he has managed to place himself as one of the most prominent figures of today's tango music.

As a performer, Rodolfo Mederos expresses a deep-felt musicality and conquers the audience with the emotional insightfulness of his interpretations. From every single note that he strikes, he draws a myriad of deep roots and good taste, typical for the greatest of artists. He is also an acclaimed composer and arranger, covering the whole range from popular to symphonic pieces for different instrumental groups. And throughout the years he has carved out a career as teacher and writer of texts on bandoneon as well as tango composition and orchestration, contributing to the formation of many of today's bandoneonists. All this makes Rodolfo Mederos a cornerstone, a quintessential figure of current tango.

"...the bandoneon has the ability to affect human existence with melancholy. One thing is to put sorrow into words; another is to feel the sorrow", says Rodolfo Mederos. "No other instrument has ever been able to express that language, that feeling."

With his trio including Armando De La Vega (guitar) and Sergio Rivas (double bass), Rodolfo Mederos will perform his virtuosic and yet emotionally intimate interpretations of classic tango pieces.

The trio will be joined on stage by the Argentinean tango dancers Natalia Games and Gabriel Angio, renowned for the dynamism of their dance and their breathtaking elegance. Their names are well known to tango lovers in Buenos Aires and around the globe. They have danced on almost every important stage in the world as part of the legendary company TangoX2 and have been invited as maestros to the biggest tango festivals. Since 2001 they direct and tour with their own tango company, Plan B.

On 17th of November through the music of Rodolfo Mederos trio and the dance of Natalia and Gabriel the audience will feel the meaning of maestro Mederos' words: "I firmly believe that a true artistic workpiece should always touch the spirit... It should always try to move the depths of our souls, at times violently."

Tickets are sold by Ticket Plus nework (http://ticketplus.bg) and at the Bulgaria Concert Hall box office on 1 Aksakov St. in Sofia.

Information about the maestros:

Natalia Games and Gabriel Angio belong to the group of the world-class tango couples, who have marked the development of argentine tango in the last two decades. They started their joint professional career as tango dancers in 1991.  In 1992 they were invited to dance in one of the most famous tango companies of all times, Tango x 2 for which they worked 5 years. During this period they performed in almost every big theater in the world as part of the shows Homenaje a Gardel, Perfumes de Tango and Una noche de Tango. In 2001 they formed their own dance company, "Plan B", with which they produced two shows - "Tango Under Construction" in 2001 and "Plan B Tango" in 2004. All these years, whether in a milonga or on a theatre stage, their performances have always been characterized by high professionalism, dynamism and breathtaking elegance.

Natalia and Gabriel are of that rare breed of tango dancers who are equally renowned as performers and teachers. In their classes they teach the style of dancing emblematic for the porteños, starting with the legacy of their own masters (legends such as Antonio Todaro, Pepito Avellaneda, Mingo Pugliese, Lampazo and others), then adding their own "new generation" flavor to show you the secrets of tango as it is danced today in the milongas of Buenos Aires. For many years they have been giving regular classes in famous Buenos Aires milongas such as Parakultural, Gricel, Club Almagro, Salon Canning etc., inspiring and teaching many of today's young argentine tango stars.

Few are the countries where Natalia and Gabriel have not yet worked as guest teachers or dancers, and there is hardly a major tango festival in the world on which they have not been invited. The festivals of Berlin, Lausanne, Sitges, Bologna, Miami, Oslo, Paris, London, Stockholm, Genova, Tel-Aviv, Sidney and many others have featured the maestros in the past years. They have also received numerous invitations from important non-tango events. Those include the World Dance Festival in Tokyo, where in 2003 they have danced for an audience of some 10,000 people in Nippon Budokan, the Classic Open Air 2002 in Berlin, where they performed with the Deutches Filmorchester Babelsberg, a special demonstration to Mikhail Baryshnikov in 2003, to name but a few.

Following its practice to bring tango dancers of international reputation to Bulgaria, TanguerIN Studio invited Gabriel and Natalia to give 4 classes for tango dancers from different levels in Sofia from 16 to 18 November 2009. Undoubtedly, their visit will allow tango fans in Bulgaria to experience the art and teaching of maestros that have contributed to the shaping of today's argentine tango.

Avant-garde tango group Astillero live in Sofia

For those who love the contemporary forms of tango music, Messechina Music organizes 2 concerts of the Argentine tango group Astillero in Sofia on 20 and 21 April at the Central Military Club.

Astillero opens the challenge with its music. This rock-solid group starts tango out to a completely new vision, rough and violent, according to the times we live in. Astillero is a tango formation that has nothing to do with the "tango" of our collective conciousness.

The orchestra, even though it is composed of classical instruments associated with tango, is revolutionary. It is the first sextet in the history of tango formed by two bandoneons, violin, cello, double bass and piano. And there's more: they only play their own new compositions. They have a repertoire of new tangos, instrumentals and songs, generating their own identity, inextricably linked with modern life. The sounds of Astillero are the sounds of Buenos Aires today and the way they play the music refects the unbalance of this city in which we are inmersed. It kicks, breaks, hurts, moves. The new lyrics add their weight in this rawness. A rough but tender voice, that cares and tears at the same time. But the concept does not end there, but keeps on developing by means of video images perfectly designed to join this hecatomb of sound. Impacting in shapes and colors projected over the players, completing the dynamic of the music.  An innovative proposal, original, different, to enjoy the new wave of tango : Tango de Ruptura.

The members, although young, have an important history among the genre. Their experience and research as musicians has led them to a fundamental teaching duty which is carried in different institutions (School of Popular music of Avellaneda, Conservatory of Styles Argentino Galván, National Academy of Tango, in between others) and for the last two years, in the Orlando Goñi School, created by themselves and other young tango musicians.

Since the conception of Astillero the group has earned international recongition thanks to diverse tours. In Europe they are well known and called back every year to take part in diferent events. This year, for instance, the Orchestra has been selected out from 900 groups from all over the world to be part of the prestigious « Womex », Music World Festival.

The activities of the orchestra go on and its music is gaining ground. The solid esthetic of Astillero attracts new groups as old masters. This is reflected in their compositions that pose a completely new approach to the genre. So much so that in November the new album « Sin descanso en Bratislava (Glosas fuera de tiempo) » will be released, including a very special guest Master Leopoldo Federico.

More information can be found on the special event website from where you cana also download photos and where you can listen to Astillero's music:
